The idea of using organic pumpkin oil for hair treatment is one that has been around for many years, and there have been some amazing claims made – some that are true, and some that were, well – less true.
In 2014, a team of researchers from Korea published a report on the use of pumpkin seed oil on people who were suffering from pattern hair loss. The study made headlines internationally, because it reported that after 24 weeks of using the oil, patients saw an increase in hair growth compared to those who were in a placebo group.
Using Pumpkin Seed Oil
The group using pumpkin seed oil reported a 40% increase in their hair count. That’s four times more than the performance of Finasteride, and in half the time.
Sadly, the study was flawed in some ways – because the 40% increase was self reported, and people aren’t always good at judging and quantifying things. In addition, the supplement that the patients used wasn’t pure pumpkin seed oil – it was pumpkin seed oil and other ingredients – so it’s hard to know which ingredients actually produced the results.
Useful For Hair Growth
With that said, organic pumpkin seed oil is useful for hair growth and for improving the thickness and texture of your hair. Pumpkin seed oil does reduce tissue DHT levels, and DHT is associated with hair loss. What’s particularly interesting is that pumpkin seed oil could be a safer alternative to Finasteride in this respect – because it has fewer side effects. Finasteride has been found to decrease people’s sex drives, and sometimes cause impotence, because DHT is an important hormone for controlling male hormone levels. Pumpkin seed oil actually reduces DHT but by a smaller amount, and in a more targeted way.
Rich In Antioxidants
Pumpkin seed oil is also rich in antioxidants -which can help to reduce inflammation, and can also help to stave off the effects of aging. There are two particularly interesting ones – tocopherol, and linoleic acid, which have powerful anti-inflammatory effects and that can be helpful not just for preventing calification on the scalp – which can be a contributor to hair loss – but also for improving your overall health and making your skin look better too.
Fight Chronic Inflammation
Pumpkin seed oil can help to fight chronic inflammation, and stave off atherosclerosis, which can lead to arterial calcification. Improving your blood supply to your scalp, by reducing arterial plaques, can be invaluable.
Rich In Minerals
Pumpkin seed oil is rich in minerals as well – and these include some minerals that are used in hair growth.
Grow Thick And Health Hair
Collectively, all of these organic hair products things can help you to have a better chance of growing thick and healthy hair. The chances of the oils being better than traditional medications for true pattern baldness are slim, but if you have hair that is just starting to get a little thinner than you would like, then organic pumpkin oil could give it a new lease of life and thicken it out a little, slowing the natural thinning that happens with age.
